Pala Meets: Beth Squire

In this edition of PALA Meets, we’ve caught up with British traveller and photographer Beth Squire. Having studied photography to a degree level, Beth now works as a freelance photographer. With a particular passion for capturing the natural environment, she travels the world for inspiration. More of her work can be seen on her website, www.bethsquire.com, and on her Instagram account @beasquire.

Beth, we absolutely love your work, so thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. First off, what led you to study photography and build a career around it?

I’ve always been quite a creative person, but it took me a while to find out how I wanted to express this, I was about 16/17 when I realised my love for photography. I’d been using cameras for years but thought of it as more of a hobby rather than a career. I was applying for universities and I was looking at architecture courses but then I remember thinking to myself, well photography is what I want to do in the long run so I might as well stick to that. I’ve always had a desire to travel and I think this made me want to take photos so I could capture whatever trip I was on and remember things that I did, the people I was with and try and get across how I felt at the time.

Much of your photography features natural landscapes. What do you love about shooting nature?

I feel very calm in nature, I forget everything else that’s going on around me when I’m out in that sort of environment. Whatever stresses or worries I have I know if I’m out hiking and taking photos nothing else will matter.

Your work takes you all over the world. Where is your favourite location to photograph and why?

I really like shooting in snowy environments, I know not a lot of people would say that but I find it so rewarding. I went to Finland, Lapland last year and It was one of my favourite trips I’ve ever been on. I think you have to go to places that will challenge you and push you and be completely different to what you are used to and Finland was definitely that!

Many of your landscape shots are taken using a drone. How did you start using drones and what do you make of them?

I started using drones only a few years ago now. I saw that quite a few photographers I really liked, such as Alex Strohl and Benjamin Hardman, had captured some pretty amazing things just by using a drone. What draws me to them is the fact that you can see things in a way not many people can, you can get a photo or video from in the air and be able to see what is around you for miles and help show people the scale of things, they still amaze me to this day.

What trips do you have coming up and what should we be looking out for on your Instagram

I recently got back from a trip to Switzerland and the Dolomites, quite a few images are up on my instagram now! Europe is definitely a place I want to explore more of. I’ve really got to get planning on future trips because let’s just say there’s more than a few places on my list!
